Tina and Gibson Kemp are two of the most wonderful people I know. They took me in like a stray dog out of the rain, fed me and offered me warmth and wisdom. They became like surrogate parents to me when I first arrived in Hamburg as a lonely musician. They had the heart to help and the experience to enlighten. Their care and compassion will always be with me, wherever I go.
On a professional note: since becoming a regular guest at their pub, I have become quite a fan of their Real English Ale and of Gibson's Chilli. The food gets me every time, I love it! Gibson learnt many of his kitchen tricks from his ex-wife Astrid Kirchher, who is famous for taking early photos of The Beatles in Hamburg.
Gibson himself came to the Reeperbahn as Ringo Starr's replacement when he was just 16! Later, as a Music Industry A&R man, he was responsible for The Cure's first Record Deal.
Holding a tight ship at Kemp's is Gibson's wife Tina, a successful Swedish singer, who still tours and performs extensively as a professional singer today.
Over the years, Kemp's has earned a very special place in my heart and I, for one, plan to go there again and again.
